I have another article published at StartupNation: Search Engine Strategies for Local Business.
In my work with small business owners, I frequently run into the idea that an online presence is not especially helpful for those who run brick-and-mortar shops and depend upon a local clientele. But, a recent survey by WebVisible and Nielsen/Netratings discovered that fully 73% of people turn to search engines first to find local businesses. This means that no matter how small one’s business, or how local one’s customer base, maintaining a visible presence in the major search engines is key to maintaining sales.
This article provides an overview of the WebVisible-Nielsen/Netratings survey, and lists a handful of tips for optimizing one’s website to reach local consumers.
